Dermal fillers and wrinkle relaxers are highly effective, non-surgical injectables used to address signs of aging, including facial volume loss and wrinkles. But what’s the difference, and how do patients decide which to choose for their skin concerns?

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are a popular solution used to correct facial wrinkles and folds associated with aging. These fillers are a hyaluronic acid-based injection designed to add volume beneath your skin’s surface, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. At Bend Plastic Surgery, we offer an array of dermal fillers tailored for different aging concerns, including Juvéderm and RHA. Juvéderm has been the go-to dermal filler since its FDA approval in 2006 and targets static wrinkles causes by aging and the loss of collagen. RHA fillers, on the other hand, are a newer injectable that are still hyaluronic-based but are approved to target dynamic and static wrinkles. You can find more information on the differences between these dermal filler options here.

Wrinkle Relaxers

Wrinkle Relaxers are injectables designed to treat fine lines caused by aging, sun damage and facial expressions. They are available in different forms, including Botox and Daxxify. Both solutions provide a non-invasive solution to relax the facial muscles responsible for causing visible lines. The relaxers work by blocking the signals from the brain that tell the muscles to contract, resulting in less movement. Results from wrinkle relaxers generally last 3-4 months.

The Main Difference Between Fillers and Relaxers

The main difference between Dermal Fillers and Wrinkle Relaxers is in their respective names! Derma Fillers work as a volumizing agent, adding subtle mass beneath the skin to fill out where volume may have been lost with aging. They typically lead to a smoother and more filled out facial appearance. Conversely, wrinkle relaxers work as a relaxing agent that targets the muscles beneath the skin. These relaxers will allow your muscles to relax, alleviating tension, and reducing visible lines.

Both cosmetic treatments can be used separately or in combination – sometimes referred to as a “liquid facelift.”

Both cosmetic treatments can be used separately or in combination – sometimes referred to as a “liquid facelift” – to address crows feet, smile lines, forehead wrinkles, sagging cheeks, and/or thinning lips. Dermal fillers and wrinkle relaxers are both administered as injectables and have little downtown post-treatment, despite the different actions beneath the skin’s surface.
