Facial expressions help us connect and communicate with others. But over time, our facial muscles start to form wrinkles around the brow, eyes, and mouth. Genetics and lifestyle, especially time in the sun, affect how fast the skin ages. Still, most aging concerns result from the natural aging process: the skin losing elasticity and collagen over time. When to start Botox, and other wrinkle relaxers, is a personal decision for all our patients, but there are some common trends regarding age.

When to Start Botox: Is There a Magic Age?

The most common question we receive around when to start Botox is: what’s the magic age? The early thirties is a typical time for patients to seek Botox for the first time, but some might want treatment at an earlier or later date. Past the age of 20, collagen production begins to slow down, and our skin starts a process of losing its thickness. As a result, wrinkles show up. If the appearance of wrinkles is a persistent worry, we recommend patients get a consultation to see if Botox is right for them. So, in theory, there is no magic age for Botox, as long as the patient feels the procedure is reasonable for them and is age 18 or older.

What is Botox, and is it Safe?

Yes, absolutely. Botox is an FDA-approved neuromodulator that gained popularity in the early 2000s for its use in cosmetic injections. But Botox has been around for even longer than that. Botox is an injectable drug used to smooth lines of expression by relaxing and softening the skin by preventing facial muscles from contracting. Other brands we offer as injectables with this same effect include Jeuveau and Dysport. Check out some of our Before & Afters and see the difference for yourself!

Preventative Maintenance is Key

Preventative maintenance can technically start any time past age 18, but our patients know best when it’s time to address aging concerns, so we don’t assign a magic age for starting Botox. Starting Botox before deep lines form helps keep wrinkles at bay before they ever form. However, if you aren’t comfortable starting Botox yet, here are some things you can start now to get into the habit of maintaining healthier skin.

  • Wear sunscreen every day, year-round (We recommend EltaMD Broad Spectrum
  • Stay hydrated as sun, wind, and pollution can stress the skin and cause premature aging
  • Eat a diet high in antioxidants and vitamins and protect your skin from the inside out
